A question - more for curiosity than anything else

Postby bob selby » Sun Dec 23, 2012 3:20 pm

I normally run my ADSL router box in what is commonly called "bridge" mode (where the box effectively acts like an ADSL modem with no router or firewall or wireless functionality) with my 040 box sitting behind it and it works very well.

The other day I had a problem and the ISP's "support guru" (PMSL - their description - clearly an oxymoron (with the emphasis on moron)) had me do a hard reset on the ADSL box so it reverted to the factory default "full router" configuration so he could run some diagnostics which predictably prooved inconclusive.

To my surprise the 040 box and its services seem to work flawlessly in this mode despite having two routers in series!!

I realise there may be a performance "hit" in doing this - but is there likely to be any other issues ???

I guess the "knock" mechanism I have set up is likely to fail, but anything else, SSH, ???

I'm going to put the box back to it's more normal "bridge" mode tomorrow.

Just curious ... :-)

Have a very Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year everyone,
Bob

There isn't really a serious performance issue other than response times. But the big issue is that NONE of the external services on FREESCO will work unless you use port forwarding on the DSL modem. You also have to use other sources to get the external IP when using any dynamic DNS application.

As far as your encounter with support, for some reason they all have the same book and if it doesn't have 'factory settings' or 'Microsoft' in the title they have no clue. The second issue is that even the beginners on this forum usually know more than they do.
If you are afraid that you might make a mistake. The chances are high that you will never learn anything.

Thanks, much as I suspected. To be honest I use very little of the external services - with the exception of SSL which I wont be using for a few weeks as I am home on holiday :-)

It has confused the hell out of my DYNDNS account tho' as it's registerd a 192.xxx IP address ;-)

As for support, yes you are right - they have a script to work through and if it's outside that scope they flounder. The thing is, the first guy had floundered and this was the "specialist"!! We never did get to the bottom of the problem and they shipped me a new box in desparation.

The problem fixed itself majically a couple of days later while I was awaiting the new box - I assume a log of the problem eventually filtered through to the single real engineer they have and he fixed it. It's the same the whole world over, I guess.

Have a very Merry Xmas

It is also worth bearing in mind that an ISP's router in "bypass" mode will be a lot less trouble.

I use VirginMedia in the UK and the Netgear Wireless Routers they hand out are notorious for their buggy firmware. All kinds of issues, including breaking VPN connections and general SSL problems. These are all bypassed with the router in "modem only" mode as then none of the Netgear Router firmware gets touched.

Personally I'd switch your router back to the "modem only" mode as it then makes life less of a headache. There will be less compromises in the wild for the FREESCO router as it is likely to confuse hackers who come across it. Whereas an ISP's router may have a firmware bug that can be compromised.

When I deal with support at ISPs I generally just lie and tell them the response they are expecting. OR just tie a laptop directly to the router for the length of the support call. It really messes with their heads if you try and explain that you are using a Linux router based on a floppy disk. They don't even know what a floppy disk IS half the time. :D
