I have just released a new hosts package. Due to the fact that by default the package blocks some ad sites from places like ebay and such that you may really want to have access to. So I have added an exclude option to the package so that when you run across such sites that you do not want to block you can add them to the hosts.exclude file and then the package will not block those sites. Be away that the exclude part only runs with an update process like "rc_hosts update" and NOT just by restarting the hosts package. The new package can be installed with
Code: Select all
Version hosts-1.6-lightning has been removed

This is possibly a supremely dumb question - but will this suppress those pain in the a** ads that appear on the MSN and Yahoo windows client ???

Is the blocking by site or by filetype - I want to cripple FLASH ads as well as HTTP and scripted etc.

Are there any "down sides" to this package ???

And will this work on 0.3.4 ???

I'm loath to move to 0.3.7 when I gather 0.3.8 is imminent.

TIA
Bob

Just use Firefox as your browser and install the "noscript", "Adblock Plus" and "Flashblock" add-ons.
Experience shared, is experience gained.

Yes, the downside is that occasionally you want to go to one of the add sites and you will have to go into the setup and put that site in the white list. Stuff like google and ebay adds that give you a link. It also slows down DNS lookups a small amount, which is noticeable to a small degree.

Yes it will run on 034.

The package has been updated, dRB has written some extra CGI scripts so that the hosts package can be ran entirely from the web control panel. The new scripting gives you the ability to easily add URLs to the exclude list and remove entries as well.

To install this package use
Code: Select all
pkg -i http://lewys-spot.dyndns.org/packages/0.3.x/hosts-1.7-lightning
