Small Update:

I've been very busy these days to take care of my packages and any related FREESCO stuff... Samba 3 package got behind because at the time being I was having problems to get a clean compile using my old Zipslack workstation. The project got shelved until I had more time to diagnosticate what was failing (many things unfortunately)

Today I resumed the hard task to port Samba 3.x to FREESCO and so far it seems I solved all the problemas I had before and after a little tweaking I got it to compile cleanly. I'm going to thoroughly test it and make sure any of my tweaks didn't broke the code anywere else. Any nasty workaround will get documented for future reference.

FYI, I'm working with the 3.02 RC2 sources, so if everything works ok I'll be releasing the package once 3.02 becomes final (it seems the release is inminent)

Yet another status update :)

Good news ! Everything's working as it should. Polished the compilation process a little bit more and reduced the hacks needed to just one (related to a missing glibc function). Lots of new features in version 3.x.

I will release it as soon as it gets final. Don't dispair, it'll be soon according to samba.org. BTW, I'll be dumping the inetd package for a more modern and secure replacement (xinetd maybe).

Would it be wise to release the newest major release already? I assume a lot of bugs will be addressed right now and a lot more versions will be released. I see they've already released version 3.0.3. So that means if this package is released it should be maintained very frequently to keep up with the bugfixes.

<!--QuoteBegin--"www.samba.org"+--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td>QUOTE ("www.samba.org")</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Common bugs fixed in Samba 3.0.3 include:

o Crash bugs and change notify issues in Samba's
    printing code.
o Honoring secondary group membership on domain member
    servers.
o TDB scalability issue surrounding the TDB_CLEAR_IF_FIRST
    flag.
  o Substitution errors for %[UuGg] in smb.conf.
o winbindd crashes when using ADS security mode.
  o SMB signing errors.
o Delays in winbindd startup caused by unnecessary
    connections to trusted domain controllers.
  o Various small memory leaks.
o Winbindd failing due to expired Kerberos tickets.

New features introduced in Samba 3.0.3 include:

o Improved support for i18n character sets.
o Support for account lockout policy based on
    bad password attempts.
o Improved support for long password changes (>14
    characters) and strong password enforcement.
o Support for Windows aliases (i.e. nested groups).
o Experimental support for storing DOS attribute on files
    and folders in Extended Attributes.
o Support for local nested groups via winbindd.
o Specifying options to be passed directly to the CUPS
    libraries.[/quote]

I'm just wondering if there's any chance this package will be ready soon, as I really, really need it.

Previous versions of Samba don't seem to allow you to join a Windows Server 2003 domain. Apparently, Server 2003 requires smb signing, which wasn't implemented in Samba until version 3.0.0.

With the number of domain controllers out there that have been upgraded (for want of a better description) to Server 2003, this package must surely be in great demand.

There are many of us that rely on people like Nachoman77 to put these packages together for us. I'm sure I echo the sentiments of many others when I say that the time and effort that goes into it is very much appreciated.

ok ... it's now july and thought i'd put out this request again ... to anyone out there in freesco-verse that's working on packages ... love to hear that a samba 3 package has been implemented. It really chews that i'm not able to map back to shared directories on my windows 2003 server from freesco.

Samba 2.2.8 works well with XP or windows 2000, but server 2003 requires smb signing and ... well 2.2.8 won't cut it so ... help - please!

Remember Kids: Google is your friend!

<a href='http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=samba+2%2E2%2E8+smb+signing' target='_blank'>http://www.google.com/search&q=samba+2.2.8+smb+signing</a>

FIRST link shows possible answers if you are running a 2.4 or a 2.6 kernel (Freesco uses the smaller/older 2.0.40 ( or .39 if you are before 033). or you can disable SMB Signing.

BUT if you happen to get it working.. post back here in 3rd Party Support please...

i wonder how did you do that? i'm trying to compile samba 3.x, but without further success - on zipslack 3.9 and newer versions. by 'tweak' you understand source / configure / automake edit, or installing/compiling additional libraries/packages on zipslack?

mmmmmmkay, samba 3.x, right?

got it compiled!
it's samba 3.0.6.rc2 actually, with SWAT www gui included.

BUT [IMPORTANT] -

* i was forced to make one slight change in source .c code. it SHOULDN'T make any difference in working, but if you will experience some weird samba working, this is to blame. however, i'm running 3.0.6 on my freesco 0.2.7 and it works fine so far. if you want it, remember, you're using it for your own responsibility.

* unfortunately, i couldn't compile library that provides multicharset feature in samba. not a big deal, but could be annoying for foreign users (i'm from poland, for example). but i will try harder to compile it properly.

* i don't have time to make eyecandy freesco package, so if you want it, let me know, and i will share packed .tar.gz with info, how to migrate from samba 2.2.x

that's all for now

ok, it's here :

<a href='ftp://ftp:freescoforum@pb128.lagow.sdi.tpnet.pl/download/samba-3.0.6rc2-rattkin.tgz' target='_blank'>ftp://ftp:freescoforum@pb128.lagow.sdi.tp...rc2-rattkin.tgz</a> (14mb)
all info included.
it's a slow 256k connection, so be patient when downloading.

and remember, it is NOT installpkg package! just simple tar.

please share here your experiences with this samba release.
