None of the kernels have extended messages unless you have the "System.map" file that was compiled with the kernel. The stock kernels have this file in the main download, but it is not installed on the floppy. The third party kernels have it as an additional download. It has the same name as the kernel but has a .map extension.
In order for ANY of them to work they MUST be name exactly "System.map" and they must be in the same directory as the kernel. They also MUST be matched exactly to the kernel they were compiled with (You can NOT mix and match). The /boot directory is the normal location on hard drive installs where you would place the file.
If you are afraid that you might make a mistake. The chances are high that you will never learn anything.
