Port Forwarding

I use port forwarding to get to my network @work
Because I wanted to have wireless as well for my guests I placed a modem in between the www and Freesco
I ordered the modem to PF port 22
With that I thought I could make a tunnnel to guide the VNC connection port 5900 through towards my Freesco box.
After PFing port 5900 through the modem I can VNC from home to work.
How come?
In my mind a tunnel is something that is used to guide other traffic through.
And the rest of the world doesn't need to know what is passing through gate 22.

Explain please.
