Hello

I feel some what lost and would appreciate some advice.

I have been looking around for some basic information on MySQL
I have manage to install mysql-4.1.7a-lightning on my new freesco
On my freetime I am trying to install FREESCO on new hardware so that I can get scrap my old 0.32 version.

But before I change to the new one I want to know the basic of mysql. I do not tend to become a mysql-guru. That is for now not the plan but I want it to be safe.

Are there any good places to start?

Since I am knew to mysql there are plenty of questions

Is it safe after I have done pkg -i http..... mysql-4.1.7a-lightning or are there additional step that I need to take

I read about passwords! I that SA Password ?
What about administration? Do I have to become a commandline junkie do some basic administration?

Command me, Dark Lords!

I suggest you also install my Apache package and then the PhpMyAdmin package which is a great web based tool to admin mySQL.

I would STRONGLY recommend un-installing or disabling mySQL 4.1 and install the older 3.23 version instead, unless you have some very specific application that requires a newer version. The reason for this is because there are some significant incompatibilities that will cause some extra work to get them to work due to the password hash table and the older version will just work without any of those problems.

True, this is due to the fact that the PHP in my Apache package is linked against the mySQL 3.x client libraries.

There are many many many PHP/mySQL based CMS systems out there that will simply run on your FREESCO as LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) server.

I'm currently toying with <a href='http://php-fusion.co.uk/news.php' target='_blank'>phpfusion</a>, but if you want more of a blog kind of thing, have a look at <a href='http://wordpress.org/' target='_blank'>http://wordpress.org/</a>

Yes it should be pretty straight forward. The only consideration would be if you have anything existing in the mySQL data base. If it is a new install then there should be no issues at all.

Well, I did as You said
I removed the 4.1.7 of MySQL

I have now installed the older version 3.23

But I think something went wrong

Look at the Report.txt

I Think its starts 3 times
I that correct ?

What do I do to correct this?

As You can see I also have added the PHPMyAdmin

Yes, that is what it is supposed to do. It starts three but if you connect to it then it will spawn more.

Looking at your report.txt I would remove the swap file because you have plenty of memory and the swap will just slow the machine down once the memory is completely used. Which any Linux system will do eventually before it starts freeing unused memory.

I would also go into the advanced setup in the extra options and change the default editor to /usr/bin/mcedit
