dyndns v0.32

Postby gefleborg » Thu Dec 22, 2011 5:10 am

I'm running an old version and I don't want to upgrade yet. I want to replace the line

snarf -qn "http://$DYNNAME:$DYNPASS@members.dyndns.org/nic/update?system=dyndns&hostname=$DYN_ACCOUNT&myip=$1&wildcard=$WILDCARD&mx=$MX&backmx=$BACKMX" /tmp/dyndns.htm

with this one

snarf -qn "http://mydns.se/u.php?h=$DYNNAME.mydns.se&p=$DYNPASS" /tmp/dyndns.htm

Where shall I put the dyndns script to get this persistent? I tried /bin/ (where it resides now) and both /boot/bin/ and /rc/ but it's replaced by the original.

If you put the script in /boot/bin/ it will always be the one that is used. This does NOT mean the one that is in the /bin/ directory will be replaced, it just means that it will be used instead of the one. The reason is because /boot/bin/ is first in the PATH. If you are ever curious as to what script is being used when there is multiple versions of the same script on your machine, just type

which dyndns

and it will show you the location of the script being used. Just make sure that when you copy the original script to /boot/bin/ and you have made the changes that you are sure the script still works.

I am curious as to what this service is called because if the line is that simple I can add it to the next version of FREESCO quite easily.

/boot/bin/dyndns

After that it will always be the one used.
If you are afraid that you might make a mistake. The chances are high that you will never learn anything.

It's a swedish service for dynamic DNS. I earlier used dyndns but it's a couple of years ago. Now dyndns was quite different so I had to look for another service and found http://www.mydns.se. It's free and the only requirement is to update once a month. The web is in swedish but I think you get the info with google translate.

Tx very much for helping out and merry x-mas to all of you in the FREESCO community.
