PoPToP

Announcements of packages that are now released.

Postby Lightning » Sun Jul 04, 2004 12:46 am

PoPToP is a VPN server that can be installed on FREESCO and allow remote access to your LAN. This package has been around for a while and posted on FREESCOsoft, but was never released on the forum due to lots of different reasons.

I have just update this package for compatibility with 033 as the previous package was made exclusively for 032 and will not run on 030 or 031 due to the lack of mppe support in the pppd binary on those versions. Currently the package can be installed on 032 or 033 with

Updated below

When the new version of this package is uploaded on FREESCOsoft the link here will be removed.
For more information about PoPToP go to <a href='http://www.poptop.org/' target='_blank'>http://www.poptop.org/</a>
I invoke something that I saw with regards to another package a time or two. I do not warrant this packages sutability nor even the slightest implication that it is sutable for use by anyone. So any problems are the sole responsibility of the installer.

Hi

I am a fair distance away from my FREESCO Machine :sniff: but I will back at it again soon, damn I hate work. I have a question with regards to this new package and 0.3.3

Just wondering if the pppd has been compiled differently to that for 0.3.2, I refer more specifically to the ability to only allow user to authenticate using MS-CHAP v2 and then only use 128 bit Encryption.. I refer to this thread <a href='http://forums.freesco.org/support/index.php?act=ST&f=21&t=11370&hl=' target='_blank'>http://forums.freesco.org/support/index.ph...=21&t=11370&hl=</a>

Basically I don't want my users to be able to authenticate with anything less than MS-CHAPv2 or use anything less than 128 bit Encryption...

This is in no way a request, merely a question, I have got around the security issue at work to satisfy the "powers-that-be", but just wondering is all..

Hope this sounds as nice and friendly as I intended it to.. :D

PS. I haven't tried 0.3.3 yet, but if previously releases are anything to go by and what I have read on here it will be excellent :biggrin3:

From the pop top website:

Features of Poptop include:

* Microsoft compatible authentication and encryption (MSCHAPv2, MPPE 40 - 128 bit RC4 encryption)
* Support for multiple client connections
* Seamless integration into a Microsoft network environment (LDAP, SAMBA) using RADIUS plugin
* Works with Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP PPTP clients
* Works with Linux PPTP client
* Poptop is, and will remain, totally free under the GNU General Public License

I couldn't have said it better Skipster. Just one extra comment that there is no radius plugin included, nor did I ever even look into those functions.

There has been an update to this package for compatibility with all of the 03x series. This is not anything critical but there are some code changes to the up-up and ip-down as well as some improvements in the rc_poptop script. So as this update is not terribly important at the moment it will be when 034 is released.

I have improved the firewall rules to allow both upload and download connections bi-directional through the PoPToP connection. I have also made some changes so that this version will be compatible with the next version of FREESCO v0.3.5 and improved the install script so that only minor changes are need to get it running and most settings are dynamically read from the running machine during the install. This package can be installed with

There were a few typos in the "e" version of this package that caused users to have to manually configure some items as well as some sytax issues. I have updated the package so that the install is fully automated and there should be very little need to edit or change anything after it has installed to make it run. I have also integrated user control into the rc_poptop script so that manually editing files should not be required. The default configuration uses xx.xx.xx.100~105 so as long as those IP addresses are free and you don't need more than five connections the automated install will work fine.

I strongly recommend removing the previous pakage first and do a full reboot before installing this package.
Code: Select all
pkg  -u  poptop-1.1.3e-lightning

The new package can be installed with
Code: Select all
pkg  -i  http://lewys-spot.dyndns.org/packages/0.3.x/poptop-1.1.3f-lightning

On a side note, this package will install and run on 035. But there are some firewall issues that cause the incryption not to work correctly and internal connections do not function correctly. If anyone wants to work on the firewall rules to get it working in 035 I am more than willing to update the package again. For the moment this package is really only rated to have full functionality on 033 and 034.

I think that PoPToP would be a better simpler solution. The one thing that I would do is to disable the encryption if you are just wanting to play games through the connection because you will get quicker responses and less CPU load But even if you decide you want encryption you can change if from 128 bit to 40 bit encryption and get increased speed. The reason for it being better is because you can have a single individual located anywhere that can also join the game as long as they have a username and password and you are not limited to just one spot. Of course the downside is that each individual has to make a connection, but even in that there really isn't very much bandwidth difference and the total data being transfered is really the issue and not the number of connections. I personally have played games through a VPN tunnel and as long as both Internet connection have low latency and reasonable speed the games play very well.

Poptop it is then freesco runs on a pII 400 here and a 2 or 300 there would the encryption be a problem ? Speed wise we have ADSL 2M/128k connections so that shouldnt be much of a problem.
Many thanks
