Announcements of packages that are now released.

Postby hclmoreira » Sun Jun 27, 2004 11:59 am

Dear Freesco users,

I am announcing my first package: Exim4.34.

Copyright © 2001,2002,2003,2004 University of Cambridge.
See the file NOTICE for conditions of use and distribution.

DO NOT WORRY IF YOU ARE USING Exim 3.0 or other,
because EVERYTHING IS PRESERVED BY USING THE DIRECTORY
/pkg/usr/local/exim4-34

rc_spool is not required.

It is included the Makefile configuration, useful for the experts:
exim-4.34_libc5_spec.tar

Good Freesco.

Please try it and give feedback to
freesco@moreira.dnsalias.net

Sounds good,
but what are the advantages of your version compared to PHCB's 4.20 ?
Experience shared, is experience gained.

I tryed to install your package

first I was anoyed to get configuration files editing automaticaly (it's just a detail but using some telnet softwares (the one incuded in win98) it just freezzes up when ever you get in editing a file,

then I got installation error "chmod /var/spool/exim No such file or directory" if I recall right

then I gave up and installed exim 4.20

just wandering if others had got it installed right

Bug in rc_exim.

Package location now at:
<a href='http://moreira.dnsalias.net/home/freesco/pkg/' target='_blank'>http://moreira.dnsalias.net/home/freesco/pkg/</a>

rc_exim now creates directory /pkg/var.

Please let me know if you all get Exim happilly working.

I still didn't see the answer to this question:

I do not know this package, but I know the Exim features meanwhile introduced in latter 4.x.

Version 4.21 corrected some nasty problems.
P67:
If what should have been the first header line of a message consisted of
a space followed by a colon, Exim was mis-interpreting it as a header line.
It isn't of course - it is syntactically invalid and should therefore be
treated as the start of the message body. The misbehaviour could have
caused a number of strange effects, including loss of data in subsequent
header lines, and spool format errors.

Corrected since version 4.33:
P9
Added code to Exim itself and to exim_lock to test for a specific race
condition that could lead to file corruption when using MBX delivery. The
issue is with the lockfile that is created in /tmp. If this file is removed
after a process has opened it but before that process has acquired a lock,
there is the potential for a second process to recreate the file and also
acquire a lock. This could lead to two Exim processes writing to the file
at the same time. The added code performs the same test as UW imapd; it
checks after acquiring the lock that its file descriptor still refers to
    the same named file.

The advantage I see on my package is that it does not depend on rc_spool.

It has also a good way of upgrading any Exim 3.x or 4.x version:

At /pkg/usr/local,
exim is a soft-link to exim-4.34, thus preserving any other version. (Calling 'pkg -i' will create exim-4.34 and will not destroy any existing version).

Note: scripting for conversion of 'configuration' from 3.x is not called automatically (conversion is not that easy).

One slip in my package: it requires /pkg/var/spool to exist in advance, and this is not in Freesco default file-system.

You can create it, however, and make a soft-link from /var/spool to there.

A short explanation is at:
<a href='http://moreira.dnsalias.net/home/freesco/pkg/' target='_blank'>http://moreira.dnsalias.net/home/freesco/pkg/</a>

Yet...
I believe we will have Freesco Exim 4.50 (from PHBC50, on the freescosoft) very soon, or even 4.60. I have it already working.

But PHBC50 package is better: it contains MySQL, and a lot of stuff.
So hold on.

I got no response by PHBC50 for packaging Exim 4.60, but got immediately response from Philip

OK, sure, that's fine and I'm happy with that if you are.
Regards
Philip

I have my own Exim 4.60 running beautifully: it has a lot of enhancements as compared with 4.34 or older (but nice) package from PHBC50.

If you are a packager, then a few tricks must be made to compile on Zipslack.

Just as to be clear, the latest of my exim package was version 4.50, for which the major change was with exim version 4.20 because it has now the exiscan patch included, which means content scanning of mails with antiviruses and antispam (also available as a package). I don't think there is any major differences in the latest release for a new package for now.
Also exim 4.50 is available at freescosoft, but should preferably be downloaded from my package page as there is a problem in the first package.
If any one else wants to do it, that's great!
Best regards,
phbc50

Fair enough, can you (phbc50) then please package it (4.60, or latest 4.62)?
